At one time the primary language of Ireland, Irish remains an official language with constitutional status and is still spoken throughout the country and abroad. Because Irish uses a different phonetic system from English, we Americans often struggle with pronunciation. Maureen Engelhardt, one of the study group leaders from Gaeltacht Minnesota, will help you puzzle out sounds as you learn some common greetings, toasts, and blessings.
Gaeltacht Minnesota was founded in 1982 as an Irish language study group. Since then, hundreds of learners have spent time in at least one of the groups. Current students are working in one of four groups that have been together between 5 and 20+ years.
