Special Performance by Lóma mór Irish Dance Club: Adding to the afternoon's excitement, the Lóma mór Irish Dance Club will present a few practiced set dance and Sean Nos performances. The Lóma mór Irish Dance Club was formed in 1999 to promote set, ceili, 2-hand, and sean nós dancing as a lifelong social, cultural, and community-building activity in the Twin Cities area. They hold regular dance classes for all ability levels in the Twin Cities, and participate in local sessions. Their passion is showing everyone that the joyous and healthful activity of Irish dance is available to all!
What is Set Dancing?
Irish Set Dancing is a traditional form of folk dancing that has been enjoyed in Ireland for centuries. Unlike Ceili dancing, set dancing is performed in square sets, usually consisting of four couples. Each set dance comprises a series of figures or patterns, and the dances can range from lively jigs to energetic reels. The structured nature of set dancing, combined with the social interaction between dancers, makes it a fun and engaging activity for everyone.
How It's Done:
The afternoon's dances will be called by the skilled Tim McAndrew, who will provide clear and enthusiastic instructions for each set. As the caller, Tim will announce the figures and guide the dancers through the sequences, ensuring that both beginners and seasoned dancers can participate and enjoy the experience. The emphasis is on having fun, so no previous experience is necessary—just a willingness to dance and enjoy the music!
